EMT to Paramedic Trainee Bridge Program:

Cabarrus County Government EMS Department, in partnership with Rowan-Cabarrus Community College (RCCC), is proud to offer an exciting opportunity for motivated EMTs ready to take the next step in their careers.

The EMT to Paramedic Trainee Bridge Program is designed to fast-track your advancement in Emergency Medical Services while providing the support you need to succeed. Through this program, participants will receive classroom instruction through RCCC, hands-on clinical and field training, and valuable on-the-job experience, all while earning full-time pay and benefits.

As a trainee, you will attend scheduled coursework to prepare for paramedic certification, participate in practical training, and continue working in an EMT capacity during school breaks, holidays, and occasional weekends.

Upon successful completion of the program and attainment of paramedic certification, participants will have the opportunity for placement as a Full-Time Paramedic with Cabarrus County EMS. From there, the department offers a wide range of leadership and professional development opportunities to support continued growth within the EMS field.

Earn and Learn ($19.71 - $23.56 per hour), On-The-Job Training, and Certification opportunity provided through Cabarrus County Government fully funded EMT to Paramedic Trainee Bridge Program. Pay grade for this position is 14.

Trainee position requires enrollment in Rowan Cabarrus County College (RCCC) Paramedic Academy Program. This is a 9-month commitment involving classroom and clinical components. After successful completion of the program and Paramedic credentialing by the state NC the EMT will transition to Paramedic position. EMS Continued Employment Agreement for a two-year period is required that starts upon completion of Paramedic credential. While in training, standard EMT duties may be completed during school breaks or when assigned by the department. This description combines EMT Basic duties with educational program requirements.

What's required: How do I get started?
1. Must possess a current/active North Carolina or National Emergency Medical Technician Certification.

3. Must apply to RCCC and meet all RCCC requirements for admission into the EMT to Paramedic Trainee Bridge Program.

General Definition of Work:

Attends education program and meets all requirements as assigned by RCCC faculty. When working as an EMT, performs responsible skilled technical work responding, rescuing and transporting the sick and injured and administering emergency medical care at the EMT level. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Shift Supervisor. Daily guidance and direction concerning patient care is provided by a Senior or Master Paramedic.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:

Attending educational program and completing all assigned requirements. When working as EMT responding to calls for emergency medical services; providing emergency medical care; driving; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.

  • Attends all required classes and completes all assigned coursework for the Paramedic Academy Program.
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls as an ambulance driver or attendant.
  • Performs emergency medical care in accordance with established written guidelines and verbal instructions from physicians.
  • Determines extent of illness or injury and establishes priorities for required care.
  • Transports persons to appropriate medical facilities.
  • Completes a variety of forms and reports pertaining to activities.
  • Maintains ambulance, equipment, and supplies in clean and proper working order.
  • Attends training courses to update skills and improve proficiency.
  • Assists with housekeeping, station maintenance, and routine office tasks.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of protocols, equipment and supplies employed in the emergency care of patients and victims of accidents and the street and road system and physical layout of the county. General knowledge of the principles of anatomy and physiology and the techniques of emergency care, including diagnosis, proper treatment, and transportation. Skill in diagnosing a victim's condition and applying emergency medical care. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to keep records; prepare reports; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, patients and their families, associates, and the general public.

Education and Experience:

  • Requires graduation from high school or a GED and North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician Credential.
  • Requires enrollment and continuing participation in RCCC Paramedic Academy Program. Requires successful completion of RCCC Paramedic Program. Credentialing as a Paramedic by the state of NC within 6 months of completing the RCCC Paramedic Academy Program.
  • Applicant must apply to both Cabarrus County EMS employment and RCCC Paramedic Academy and be accepted by both entities in order to complete the Paramedic Trainee (EMT to Paramedic Bridge Program)
  • Some experience and training in emergency medical care preferred.

Special Requirements:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Possession of all certifications for the position as required by the State of North Carolina and the department. Position is a safety-sensitive position as defined by the Drug Free Workplace Policy.

Physical Requirements:

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to blood borne and airborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
