Tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Florida International University (FIU) invites applications for a tenure-track, faculty position at Assistant Professor, in Structural Engineering with specialization in Bridge Engineering. The anticipated start date will be Spring 2025.This position is part of an initiative to expand broad bridge engineering expertise at FIU.
In 2013, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) funded a Tier One University Transportation Center (UTC) (www.abc-utc.fiu.edu) at FIU, which was devoted to Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC). In 2016, the U.S. DOT continued funding of the ABC-UTC. In 2023, the U.S. DOT funded a Tier One Innovative Bridge Engineering/Accelerated Bridge Construction UTC (IBT/ABC-UTC) at FIU. Through the efforts of ABC-UTC, IBT/ABC-UTC, and support from the private industry, Federal and other State transportation agencies, the CEE department is carrying out major research studies in bridge engineering, through its University Transportation Center. The department boasts sophisticated and state of the art testing facilities such as the Titan America Structures and Construction Testing Laboratory and The Wall of Wind (WOW) (www.wow.fiu.edu). WOW is among seven labs in the nation with the designation of “Experimental Facilities” under the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) program announced by the National Science Foundation.
Applicants should preferably have a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering and a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline. Candidates must have completed their Ph.D. at the time of employment. Strong evidence of research/scholarship excellence is required. Industrial experience is preferred. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Florida (or the ability to obtain such licensure within four years of employment) is preferred. Responsibilities will include teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the structural engineering curriculum, directing graduate students, and establishing an externally funded research program in the area. Established working relationship with agencies funding research projects will be a plus.
The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with ongoing activities at IBT/ABC-UTC and work with affiliated faculties on ongoing research studies,, complement the existing expertise, articulate a coherent agenda of research and scholarship and to identify potential funding sources for such research. Preferred areas of expertise include, but not limited to advanced materials, corrosion engineering, prestressed concrete, automation in bridge engineering and use of emerging advanced technologies in bridge engineering, such as Artificial Intelligence.
